The square in front of Amalienborg Palace was intended to be the main street of a new urban plan, which should be considered as one of the friendliest in Europe. Planning Frederiksstaden began in 1749, by a series Copenhagen shipping magnate and wealthy merchants decided to expand the city in its civilian expansion continues. The central importance of classical sounding Amalienborg is a result of this planning. The sprawling complex has very urban character. As a model was the development of the Garden City.

The castle was designed by the Danish architect Nicolai Eigtved (1701 - 1754) who built a number of buildings in Denmark. He is co-founder of the Danish "neoclassicism" and is considered a connoisseur of the Rococo. His buildings includes Friedrichsruh Castle in Schleswig-Holstein.

After six years of work by 2010 a total of 5200 m² area had been renewed. 250 years, the building now endures. Ten of them, during the renovations, Amalienborg remained uninhabited.

Together with architects own restoration plan has been developed. This includes ensuring that various floors in the building can be achieved only by an entrance could, why an additional staircase was built.
